Widespread rains likely to continue till Thursday

ISLAMABAD: Flash floods in country’s northwestern upper parts and countrywide torrential rains continued to play havoc from Chitral to Sindh amid relief activities in affected areas, Samaa reported.

Widespread rain-thundershower lashed Sindh, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, FATA, Quetta and Sibbi divisions on Sunday as Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast more rains from Monday to Thursday.

According to Samaa correspondent, at least 10 people have been killed in rain-related incidents across Sindh province. The overall death toll from the recent rains and flood has cross 50.

The PMD said a severe weather system is likely to persist in Chitral district and other upper parts from Monday, having potential to cause flash flooding and urban flooding in vulnerable areas.

Synoptic Situation:

Strong monsoon currents are penetrating into southern parts of the country and expected to continue during next 2 to 3 days. Moderate monsoon currents are also penetrating in upper parts of the country and likely to continue in coming days.

More widespread rain-thundershower is expected in south Punjab (Bahawalpur, D.G Khan, Multan divisions), Sindh (Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad divisions), east Balochistan (Zhob, Kalat, Sibbi, Nasirabad divisions), D.I khan, Bannu divisions.

Scattered heavy falls are also expected in Bahawalpur, D.G Khan, Multan, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur, Hyderabad, Larkana, D.I Khan, Bannu, Zhob, Kalat, Sibbi and Nasirabad divisions during the period. Rain-thundershower is expected at scattered places in Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Kohat, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Sahiwal, Karachi divisions, Islamabad, FATA, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Widespread rains (with scattered heavy falls at times very heavy in Bahawalpur, D.G Khan, Multan, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur, Hyderabad, Larkana, D.I Khan, Bannu, Zhob, Kalat, Sibbi and Nasirabad divisions) are expected from Monday to Wednesday.

Heavy rains may generate flash flooding and urban flooding in Punjab, upper KP, Sindh and eastern parts of Balochistan during the period, and therefore, all concerned authorities are requested to take precautionary measures accordingly.

Relief and Rescue Activities

Pakistan Army continued its relief and rescue activates in northern areas, Punjab and Sindh. However, reports said the military has temporarily halted rescue efforts in Chitral due to severe weather conditions.

Hundreds of people trapped in remote areas of Chitral have been rescued by army soldiers.

Army Relief Efforts in Chitral

In Chitral, 7.2 ton ration was distributed by helicopters and vehicles on Sunday.

ISPR said some 98 people were rescued including 48 stranded tourists who were rescued to Peshawar by C-130 of Pakistan Air Force. An Iron Bridge was launched by army engineers at Barooz near Chitral.

Army Rescue in Layyah, DG Khan, Rajanpur

Army troops are undertaking evacuation of affected people in Layyah, DG khan and Rajanpur districs.
According to ISPR, some 960 people have been evacuated in Layyah and surrounding areas. Food packs distributed and 803 patients treated in Army free medical camps of Layyah.

Army is assisting civilians administrant for evacuation of people from flood affected areas of Sadiqabad, Rahim Yar Khan, Khanpur and Liaqatpur areas.

ISPR said over 40000 people and 73530 livestock have been evacuated.

On the other hand, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) continued it relief and rescue efforts in flood affected areas of Gilgit and Chital where thousands of food packs and tens have been distributed among the affectees.

Flood Situation in Rivers

The Khyber Pakthunkhwa Irrigation department has reported medium flood in river Sindh at Khairabad with 572800 cusecs water discharged while river Kabul at Warsak with 67135 cusec and 132700 cusecs respectively on Monday morning.

According to Irrigation Department, Indus river in flow at Turbela with 410000 cusecs and Adezai river at Adezai bridge with 52800 cusecs are flowing at medium flood level.

All other rivers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are flowing at their normal to low levels.

The people have been requested not to pay attention to rumours regarding floods and get information from the offices of deputy commissioners, MET office and PDMA pertaining to floods.

The Indus River is likely to attain high flood during next 24 hours, as hundreds of villages in Kacha area (riverbed) in Sindh have already been inundated, with rescue and relief operations underway in Ghotki, Kandhkot and Kashmore districts.

Flash Devastation in GB

At least 43 houses, 6 Mosques and one hotel have been completely destroyed in Sakardu, Baltistan and Ghanche due to monsoon rain and flood in Rivers.

Commissioner Baltistan Division, Malik Muhammad Ahkter Khan told media that as many as 8 hydel power houses, 8553 Kanals of land, 250 animals, 65 kilometers roads in various areas have been affected.

He said that due to flood many others connective bridges have
also collapsed as heavy downpours in Baltistan and adjoining areas had disrupted routine life by damaging road links among different valleys.

Commissioners said that as part of rescue and relief operation, relief goods, food items, tents and others items have been distributed
among the peoples affected by the flood.

Flood plays havoc in Hazara division

Torrential rains resulting in flash flood on Monday destroyed dozens of houses, roads, crops and households in all over Hazara division area.

According to the details, continuous monsoon rain, land sliding and flood in most parts of hilly areas in district Abbottabad and Manshera cut off land communication among different localities.

Road links in Galyat, Nathaigali, Oghi, Baffa, Ghai, Havelian, Kaghan and Sirran valley have been badly damaged and in some parts
communication links were totally disrupted.

In Oghi city, over flooded stream which was flowing beside the Oghi bazar has caused losses of millions of rupees when water entered in the bus terminal, Anwar Shopping Center, NADRA office, Shah Gee market, Khushal market and Banaras Market while residents and shopkeepers have shited themselves to safer places.
