Nov 30, -0001

BHAWANA: Chaotic scenes were witnessed Friday as Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif arrived here to distribute aid to the victims of recent devastating floods.

Several hundred victims staged a protest in the ancient city of Bhawana as the police prevented them to meet the chief minister. The security officials forced them to clear the way for the vehicle of chief minister and his entourage.

The protestors were complaining that they did not receive cheques and aid as promised by the provincial government.

The floods victims alleged that local officials are demanding bribes to get them enrolled in the list of affected people.

Zaeem Qadri, Punjab government spokesman, while talking to Samaa denied allegations.

He said that the government is distributing Rs80,000 for completely destroyed houses and Rs40,000 for a partially damaged house.

Local revenue official or tehsil officials are not authorized to distribute financial aid, he added. – Samaa
