Media reports on Sharifs meeting based on assumptions: Kayani

Staff ReportISLAMABAD: Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Wednesday dismissed as speculations the reports carried by newspaper following his meeting with Sharif brothers in Lahore. In a short but clear reply during a luncheon meeting hosted in the honor of visiting Chinese premier here, Gen Kayani said: “Whatever I had to say, I said on April 30. “There were serious security concerns about the holding of general elections. But election has become a reality now,” he said. To a question, the army chief clarified that reports published newspapers regarding his meeting with Sharif brothers at Model Town were based on speculations. Speaking on this occasion, US envoy Richard Olson said it was the prerogative of the new government to negotiate with Taliban. “But what remains to be seen is what will be the pre-conditions of talks,” he said. Praising high voter turnout, he said that anti-democracy forces were defeated in the general elections. – SAMAA
