PM approves electricity tariff hike

Staff ReportISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif on Friday accorded his approval to increase electricity tariff by Rs2.50 per unit. The decision was taken by the prime minister at a high-level meeting aimed at reviewing the energy crisis. PM Sharif decided to take comprehensive steps to increase power generation. Issues relating to power theft, uniform tariff and line losses came under discussion. According to the water and power ministry, the government has to give a subsidy of Rs350 billion because electricity, which is being purchased at Rs14/unit, is sold at Rs9/unit. It said that up to Rs150 billion could be saved by increasing the power tariff by Rs2.50/ unit. The meeting was told that a new energy policy would be devised by the month-end. – SAMAA
