Mauritius PM dissolves parliament

MAURITIUS: Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Chandra Ramgoolam has dissolved parliament and called fresh elections for May 5.

Announcing the dissolution late Wednesday, Ramgoolam, leader of the Labour Party, said he would be seeking a new term as prime minister after the polls.

His governing party, in power since July 2005 in a coalition with social democrats, is considered favourite to retain pontrol of the national assembly against a divided opposition.

The assembly's five-year term expires in July. AGENCIES
