Three polio workers shot dead in Karachi, one in Mansehra

Staff ReportKARACHI: Three polio workers, two females among them, were killed when two polio teams administering vaccination to children in Karachi were attacked, SAMAA reported Tuesday.The attack prompted polio workers to boycott the campaign in Sindh over security concerns.Police and rescue said shots were fired on the polio team in Qayyumabad area of Karachi, near Sir Syed hospital.Two female workers and their male colleague were critically injured in firing while anther lady worker was wounded in the attack and rushed to Jinnah hospital where they were pronounced dead.The attackers, who were riding two motorbikes, managed to flee from the scene after firing shots on two separate teams in the area. Sources said the polio teams were administering anti-polio drops in the area sans any security.The attack comes a day after three-day anti-polio vaccination campaign was kicked off in Karachi, excluding some sensitive areas. Officials said 5, 800 teams have been formed to complete the task of vaccinating 2.0 million children. Campaign will remain suspended in SITE, Gadap Town and Baldia Town due to security reasons. Meanwhile, another polio worker was shot dead in KPK’s Mansehra town. The incident was reported in Shergarh area.Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has condemned the attacks on polio workers. SAMAA
