Mob lynches two telecom company employees in Karachi’s Machhar Colony

Police arrest three suspects as it still tries to ascertain the reasons for which they were lynched

Two employees of a telecommunication company were lynched to death on Friday by a mob in Karachi’s Machhar Colony, SAMAA TV reported.

Keamari SSP Fida Hussain Janwari said that the victims were reportedly visiting the area check signal strength and consistency in the area.

Allegedly, some rumors spread that they were trying to abduct children.

Upon hearing the rumors, several area residents attacked and brutally beat the telecom company officials.

The injuries were so severe that the two men ultimately succumbed to their injuries.

While a police squad was dispatched, it was too late to save the men from being lynched.

Later, police officials said that they had recorded the statement of an eyewitness.

Three arrested

Later on Friday, police said that they had arrested three suspects involved in lynching the employees of telecom company in Machhar colony.

Deputy Inspector General South Zone Irfan Baloch, while talking to SAMAA TV said that they were still investigating the matter.

“The absence of their valuables including laptops and cellular phones points towards reports that they were first looted and then an angry mob lynched them,” he said.

He added that the police have started a thorough investigation to determine the cause of lynching the employees.

Baloch further said that after reviewing some videos shot by onlookers had helped them identify and arrest the main culprit Abdul Ghafoor and two other suspects while they were conducting raids to arrest other suspects involved.

Machar colony

The Machar colony (mosquito) colony is considered the most underprivileged area where large numbers of stateless citizens including Bengalis, and Burmese have been living there for a long time.

Due to severe poverty, most young people either fall victim to addictions or become members of the banned outfits.

Deadly rumor

Police said that they are still struggling to determine what happened on Friday, adding that a squad sent to the scene were chased away by residents.

The SAMAA TV team investigated the matter, heard eyewitnesses testimony and saw gruesome videos of the incident.

On the condition of anonymity, an eyewitness said that some alleged street criminals had looted valuables from the victims and later accused them of being dacoits to make a clean getaway.

Another eyewitness said that the victims were in a car, and a policeman also sustained injuries while trying to stop the unfortunate incident.

He said that following the incident, a heavy police contingent along with law enforcement personnel reached the scene.

“When a police squad was dispatched, it was too late to save the men from being lynched,” he said, adding that “The angry mob also attacked the police vans.”

The eyewitness further said that when the law enforcement personnel asked for the bodies, area residents changed their statement, claiming that the men were allegedly trying to kidnap local children.

“It is the responsibility of law enforcement to determine the real cause of the unfortunate incident,” he commented.
