PM orders release of Rs1.5 bln for Sindh flood victims

Staff ReportKARACHI: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani today ordered immediate release of Rs1.5 billion for rehabilitation of millions of people affected by the recent monsoon rains in interior Sindh. The prime minister directed Ministry of Finance to release the said amount at the earliest. Premier Gilani assured that all possible measures would be taken to help the affected people. Meanwhile, Information and Broadcasting Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan launched an appeal to the United Nations for an urgent provision of $357 million humanitarian assistance. She said correct assessment of flood damages would be made possible by one month. Addressing a press conference along with UN officials, Information Minister Awan said six million people, 400, 000 acre of crops and infrastructure were widely affected by the stormy rains. The minister expressed the hope that the international community would fully extend its support to Pakistan. SAMAA
