KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court has sentenced to death by hanging two traffic police constables after finding them guilty of kidnapping and raping a three-year-old girl, Sana.

On Monday, the court ordered Noor Mohammad and Bashir Ahmed to pay Rs 0.1 million to Sana’s family and sentenced them to ten years imprisonment and death by hanging.

Medical reports had earlier proven that they did rape Sana.

The case was recommended for anti-terrorism proceedings by the Sindh chief minister's advisor Sharmila Farooqui who was present for the verdict. She had argued that the murder was an attempt to spread panic and fear among the population.

The men had dumped Sana's body near Gora Qabristan in Karachi after kidnapping her from Korangi.

”I came home after saying my prayers in mosque,” said relative Qasim. “That’s when they asked me where has Sana disappeared to?” A search ensued amid panic, when a child from the neighbourhood told Sana's family that the two policemen "who had taken Sana away on a motorcycle" had returned to the neighbourhood.

They found the policemen with the child's help “As we started beating the cops, they started admitting to killing her," said neighbour Zia-ul Haq. The men were then handed over to the Zaman Town police.

Sana's body was discovered after one of the detained policemen pointed out its location.

Noor Mohammad, one of the arrested policemen, claimed he was innocent and in fact it was the other policeman, Bashir, who dumped the body in the gutter.

A police official told the media that the policemen claim they are innocent, and they only dumped the body after they found it floating in the tank of their house. SAMAA
