RAWALPINDI: The government has converted Kohlu Cantonment into a Frontier Constabulary Camp.

Pakistan Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told SAMAA Tuesday that the decision was made by the political government. "The cantonment will be in Dera Bugti and the army would continue with its duties at the Pakistan Petroleum Limited installments."

Major Abbas said that four more wings would be recruited for the protection of Sui installments. But no time frame has been disclosed.

The Gawadar Cantonment will continue its work which is significant as far as the naval limits are concerned, he said.

“This is a political decision,” commented defense analyst Ejaz Haider while speaking to SAMAA. “The cantonment was a controversial issue and it is a positive sign that the FC is replacing the army there.”

Separatists and hardliners may accept this decision. “Time will tell how the agreement will materialize because there have been pacts in the past too,” he added.

However, analyst Ihtisham-ul Haq disagreed. “This decision has been taken under pressure,” he maintained while speaking to SAMAA. It will have a negative impact and demoralise the army, he maintained.

“The army was not supported and liked in Musharraf’s tenure especially in Balochistan but the army operation against militants in Malakand has changed the situation.”

But this decision, he said, will create unrest in other provinces. The army is an institution and such decisions will affect it. And it seems that the army has taken this decision by compulsion, he added. SAMAA
