One labourer died and several were injured after the roof of a building under construction in Karachi’s Defence Phase VI collapsed Saturday morning.
Rescue teams and police have reached the site. The injured people are being moved to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. So far, two of the labourers have been declared critical.
It is suspected there are more workers stuck under the debris. According to reports, there were between 30 to 40 labourers working at the site. Cranes and other heavy machinery have been called for assistance in the rescue operation.
A witness told SAMAA TV the wooden planks supporting the building buckled bringing the entire building down.
Immediately after the collapse, a huge number of people gathered in the area. The police have cordoned off the site and are trying to disperse the crowd.
The story will be updated as details come in.
