Ravi project case, advance income tax, SBP bill irks opposition

Here are the stories, updates and developments we are following Saturday, January 29, 2022: Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced challenging the Lahore High Court’s decision to scrap the Ravi River Urban Development Project in the Supreme Court. The premier visited the site on Friday during his one-day trip to Lahore. The LHC declared the project illegal and passed orders to immediately halt construction on January 25.
  Multan Sultans will face Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings will lock horns with Quetta Gladiators in Pakistan Super League’s seventh edition today at the National Stadium in Karachi. The first match will begin at 2:30 pm and the other at 7:30 pm. So far, Zalmi and Sultans are leading with their successful face-off with Gladiators and Kings, respectively.
Pakistan is paying Rs4 more on every Rs100 recharge. The available balance of Rs72.80 after Rs27.20 will be deducted as an additional tax. Telecom companies have started to collect 15% advance income taxes on phone calls, internet packages and other internet services from January 16. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government had proposed a 10% to 15% advance tax on telecom services in the mini-budget.
On January 26, the Republic Day of India, a woman was kidnapped, gang-raped and assaulted in the eastern part of the capital, New Delhi. The Delhi Police has, so far, arrested four accused. The 21-year-old’s hair was chopped, garlanded with shoes and made to walk the streets by the accused as the crowd cheered the violence.
The opposition has more members in Senate than the treasury, but it failed to prove its majority on Friday as the Senate successfully passed the most crucial legislation, the State Bank of Pakistan Amendment Bill. Sanjrani’s vote proved to be a victory for the government. The bill received 43 votes in favor and 42 against. Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz, Pakistan Peoples Party and other opposition parties, put together, form a majority in Senate, but they managed to turn this majority into a minority.
