Sri Lanka to learn Champions Trophy fate next week

Nov 30, -0001
MUMBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) will make a final decision next week on whether
the rescheduled Champions Trophy tournament will remain in Sri Lanka.
Pakistan was originally due to host the one-day
international competition in 28 but after several teams
voiced security concerns about playing there, the ICC reacted
by postponing the event before switching venues last month.
Relocated to Sri Lanka, the original reserve venue,
concerns remain over weather patterns on the island nation
during the September-October tournament period.
The ICC chief executives' committee would discuss the issue
on Wednesday and make a recommendation to its board, who would
make a final decision on Monday, a statement from cricket's
governing body said on Tuesday.
"If it is decided that potential weather patterns would
permit the event to proceed successfully...preparatory work
standard for all ICC events would take place," the statement
added.
"If the eventual decision were to be that those potential
weather patterns would not allow certainty in staging the
tournament, then the ICC would seek bids from interested
locations with a view to deciding on a (new) host in April." -REUTERS
