Mastermind behind attack on MQM MPA flees after encounter; father taken into custody: police

[video width="640" height="360" mp4=""][/video] KARACHI: The mastermind behind the attack on Khawaja Izharul Hassan, an MQM lawmaker and Leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly, was injured during an exchange of fire with the police but managed to flee the scene late Sunday night. His father was arrested. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Abdul Karim Sarosh Siddiqui, belongs to the newly-emerged outfit, Ansarul Sharia Pakistan (ASP). He is enrolled in the BS programme of Applied Physics department at Karachi University and is in his second year. After a number of raids in different areas such as Sacchal, Sohrab Goth and Malir, a police team led by Malir SSP Rao Anwar conducted a search operation in Gulzar-e-Hijri area in connection with the presence of suspects. A number of suspects were taken into custody. During the search operation, an encounter took place in Kaneez Fatima Society during which a policeman was killed and another wounded, whereas the suspected militant managed to flee, said the SSP. The police, acting on a tip-off, had surrounded the house, after which suspects opened fire on the officials from inside the house. As a result, two policemen were injured. One of them, Constable Aijaz, succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. SSP Rao Anwar said the suspect was identified as Abdul Karim Sarosh Siddiqui, a central commander of ASP and a dangerous terrorist. He is still at large. Meanwhile, the police have taken his father, Sajjad, into custody. The spokesperson of Ansarul Sharia was also arrested from Defence Housing Authority area in connection with the case. The SSP further said Siddiqui is a close friend of another suspected militant, Hassaan, who was killed during the assassination attempt on the MQM leader. Hassaan was identified as an engineer and, according to the Counter-Terrorism Department, was a political activist who lived in Sohrab Goth. His laptop and other items were taken into custody by the police. Suspect was policeman’s neighbor Interestingly, the suspect, Abdul Karim, was the neighbor of a police official. The official’s house even bore the name plate with his name, Inspector Arif Siddiqui, inscribed on it. Background Khawaja Izharul Hassan survived an assassination attempt when he was returning home from Eid prayers on Saturday. One of the assailants, later identified as Hassaan, was killed in the cross fire, along with one of Khawaja Izharul Hassan's guards and a teenager. Four other people were reported to have been injured.
